Oh, thank Arceus.

August winced at the sunlight that shone brightly after he got through the steady wall of trees from Greenberry Woods. Half of his Pokemon weren't up for any other battles, while the other half would probably do just fine if any wild Pokemon were to detect them. Considering Route 2 was a literal path from the edge of the Greenberry Woods to Falldale Town -- which August could see on the horizon -- it would probably be easy for wild Pokemon to spot them.

The question would be whether or not the wild Pokemon would be bold enough to attack August and his team.

There was some chatter from the nearby trees at the very edge of the Greenberry Woods. If August looked up, he would spot an Aipom staring curiously down at him, looking mischievous as it eyed August's pack. The Aipom bounced on its tree limb, dislodging a pair of Lum berries to the ground.

The sound of berries hitting the ground appeared to startle a Nincada, the small Pokemon poking its head out of a patch of tall grass. It spotted August and froze, apparently trying to stay still enough so August will not spot it.

On the flip side, absolutely heedless of August's existence, a Yamper came barreling out of nowhere to scoop up one of the Lum berries. As it started to retreat, it then noticed August and paused, looking as if it dared August to challenge it for the Lum berry.

"You can have it, don't worry," August said to the Yamper as it stared at him. It probably wanted to look intimidating, but the puppy-like Pokemon only succeeded in looking a little derpy with the Lum berry sticking out of its mouth.

August wasn't interested in battling right now, to be honest. If need be he could send out Roulette, maybe even the newly-named Parlay, if a wild Pokemon decided to mess with him, but he would much rather just walk straight through the route and be done with it.

With that thought, August did look up and catch the Aipom's eye. August raised an eyebrow at the Pokemon and held the straps of his pack just a little tighter...

Challenge accepted.

While the Nincada was passed by and the Yamper scampered off, satisfied that its Lum berry wouldn't be taken, the Aipom leaped to the next tree to stay close to August as he walked. However, since the woodlands' trees didn't continue to line Route 2, the Aipom took the chance as soon as it ran out of tree branches.

With a flying leap, the Aipom jumped off of the last tree branch and onto the back of August's pack, tugging at the straps in the hopes of dislodging the pack from the man's shoulders with surprise and force.

"Hey!"

The Aipom had leaped and landed on August's shoulders, evidently trying to take his pack. August didn't really have too much in it aside from the starting trainer supplies -- although maybe the Aipom could smell some of the berries or was just being a pest -- but he didn't want to lose any of that.

Although the Aipom had a decent grip, August maneuvered the pack enough so he could keep a grip on the straps as well. Since the wild Pokemon was behind him on his shoulders, August was having a bit of a difficult time trying to leverage a way to dislodge the Aipom itself.

The Aipom greatly overestimated its own strength. The trainer kept a firm grip on the backpack, enough so the Aipom lost its grip.

With an angry chatter, the Aipom flipped over August's shoulder using his front paws and tail to land before him on the path. It balanced on its tail, trying to become as tall as possible to look intimidating.

The good news was that August was able to best a monkey Pokemon and keep ahold of his pack. The mediocre news is that the Aipom was apparently pissed off enough that it couldn't steal August's stuff and wanted to battle.

August could probably outrun an Aipom, but he didn't want even more trouble down the road. He opted to send out his healthiest Pokemon in the hopes that this would be a quick battle.

"C'mon out, Roulette!" he said, and his Ralts appeared at the same instant that August commanded her to use, "Psychic!"

He wanted to keep the battle as short as possible. Falledale Town was right there over the horizon.

The Psychic hit true, dishing out decent damage to the Aipom. The Aipom, though, retaliated by doing a Tail Whip and Scratch combo that seemed to really hurt Roulette, too. Fortunately, a second Psychic sent the Aipom running (and probably spitting out curses in its own language).

"Good job, Roulette," August praised, and his Ralts cooed in response. He returned her to her pokeball for a rest and mentally tried to figure out how his team fared if they encountered any other aggressive wild Pokemon. Parlay was probably the most fighting-fit at the moment.

August Spector, Roulette gained 6 exp. points! Roulette grew to level 8!

With Roulette's ability to Trace, she had copied the Aipom's ability to Pickup and found an old Potion that was lying around nearby.

After the excitement of the battle, a quiet seemed to fall over the path. As far as August could see, there weren't any other wild Pokemon out and about at the moment who may bother them. He could be home free to Falldale Town.

August blinked down at Roulette when she handed him a potion, of all things, that she apparently picked up from the ground. He probably should have some reservations about taking someone else's forgotten leftovers or garbage, but he supposed a new trainer shouldn't be picky. He thanked her before he had put her back in her pokeball and took a few minutes to double-check his pack.

He took a deep breath as it became apparent that his bag was still in one piece -- no thanks to that Aipom -- and an even bigger sigh of relief when he didn't have any other trouble going through the rest of the route to Falldale Town.
