Raphael tried not to sigh at seeing his wallet go on a severe diet, but he did nod and thank the game attendant as he received his batch of park balls. The game attendant smiled and gestured to the doors that led to the Safari Zone, signaling that Raphael could start his game as soon as he set foot outside the door.

The Safari Zone was filled with mostly plains reminiscent of what Raphael saw of the rest of Route 9. The area itself stretched far enough on every side that Raphael could not see the fences that signaled the end of the protected areas, but he could certainly hear the cries of various Pokemon out and about.

Raphael felt a little naked not having his own Pokemon with him, but he squared his shoulders and started marching forward. "Here we go..."

There was a screech from above Raphael, and a Skarmory was staring down at him as it gently circled above. It seemed more curious than anything else as it began to fly just a touch lower, trying to see what Raphael would do.

Raphael stared up at the Skarmory that was flying above him. He could lug a Park Ball up at the steel bird, and he was sure it would be fine on his ranch, but Raphael wasn't quite sure he wanted one. Really, the only experience Raphael had with a Pokemon that flew was his Charizard. And, while Steel-types were probably similar to Rock-types with their high defense, Raphael had no idea what to expect with a Skarmory.

He walked on, figuring that he would see what else he could spot before trying to catch a Skarmory.

Seeing as Raphael wasn't bothering the Skarmory, the Skarmory also moved on and flew off in the opposite direction.

There was a rustling in some of the overgrown shrubberies to Raphael's right and, after a moment, a pair of brown ears popped up. The Eevee stared up at Raphael, waiting to see what the human would do. There was a bit of a glint in the Pokemon's eyes...

Raphael blinked down at the Eevee that honestly looked as if it wanted to challenge him.

Instinctively, Raphael reached around his waist as if his belt of pokeballs was still there to call out one of his own Pokemon. Instead, he came up empty, of course.

Honestly? Eevee would be a fantastic Pokemon for his team and ranch itself, especially with all the evolution possibilities. A Jolteon and-slash-or a Flareon would be great to raise.

So, Raphael took out his pack of park balls and lugged one at the Eevee, hoping it would bounce on the Pokemon's head and catch it on the first try.

The Eevee seemed like it had been waiting for Raphael to throw a park ball.

As the sphere flew towards the Eevee, it braced itself before leaping up to meet the park ball. Instead of allowing itself to be captured, the Eevee reached up and whacked the ball off-course, letting it break upon hitting the hard ground.

The Eevee landed again and waited to see what Raphael's next move would be. It stayed still, almost in a play-bow position. Perhaps it thought this was a game.

Raphael barely watched the park ball bounce away and break. His gaze was on the Eevee and, with a raised eyebrow, asked it, "Are we playing a game?"

Since the Eevee didn't seem inclined to move at the moment, Raphael crouched down lower, trying not to seem too threatening (not that the Eevee appeared to be particularly intimidated). Maybe the Eevee would be more inclined to be caught if Raphael was more so on its level.

After a few minutes of a staring contest, Raphael threw another park ball. He tried to move quickly, hoping to catch the Eevee off-guard.

The answer to Raphael's question appeared to be, "Duh, obviously!"

Like the first park ball, the Eevee batted the second park ball out of the air but was fortunately still invested in this invented game. It stayed close by and still somewhat in its play-bow pose. This time, however, its front paws were fidgety, tapping the ground as if in anticipation for the next ball throw or to dash away.

Well, shit. Raphael didn't want the Eevee to run away. Hopefully it just wanted to keep playing, but Raphael wasn't so sure.

He paused, trying to figure out what to do. He was still crouched, one hand by the park balls and the other bracing himself against the ground. Feeling along the ground, Raphael grabbed a small rock -- not too much bigger than a pebble, something light -- and took the chance.

He chucked the pebble, hoping the Eevee would try to bat at that and would then be caught off guard at the park ball being chucked at it from the other direction.

Raphael's plan worked.

When the trainer tossed the pebble, the Eevee shot up into the air to bat at the rock. It didn't see the park ball coming at it. The ball connected with the Eevee's side and, although the park ball shook a few times, it ultimately stilled to signal the capture.

Raphael breathed a sigh of relief, unable to help but grin as he went to collect the park ball that now held his new Eevee. He'd have to figure out a proper name for the playful Pokemon but, for now, he still had plenty of park balls to use up.

He made sure to put the Eevee's park ball separate from the empty ones before moving on quietly to see what else would appear.

As Raphael continued throughout the Safari Zone, a Jangmo-o appeared before him on the path. The Pokemon stared him down, its eyes narrowed, evidently trying to decide if Raphel was a threat or not.

Well, that was a Pokemon he hasn't really seen before. Raphael wondered what type it was -- Steel, maybe, with all the platings and scale-like armor on it?

No matter what the Pokemon was, it was staring Raphael down. Raphael knew there were Safari Zone attendants all over the place should he need them, but it was still a bit unnerving to be glared at by a wild Pokemon without his own partners by his side.

The easiest option was to lug a park ball at the Pokemon.

The park ball hit its mark, smacking the Jangmo-o right on the head.

Unfortunately, the ball barely touched the ground before the Jangmo-o broke right out. The Pokemon seemed to snort but stayed put in its spot, still staring Raphael down.

The Pokemon popped out of the park ball very quickly and Raphael stared evenly back at it. He didn't want to try running -- the Pokemon looked as if it would give chase -- so Raphael figured there was only one option.

He chucked a second park ball at it.
