Happiness: Mesa 1 (4/5), Rico 1 (4/5), Nova 1 (4/5)August had some strategy up his sleeves, making Sadie second-guess just how naive or inexperienced he really was as a trainer.
Slam didn't seem to do as much damage as Sadie would have liked on the Nincada, and she was contemplating switching to Rollout. Building up that continuous attack would have been great -- and, if Mesa was able to keep it up, possibly could have taken cared of whatever August's second Pokemon was in one hit -- but the Nincada did a Sand Attack.
Mesa shook her head rapidly, trying to dislodge the sand from her eyes, and was hit with the Scratch attack as she was distracted. Sadie opted to learn from her opponent and said, "Defense Curl, Mesa, then use another Slam!"
May as well get Mesa's stats up as much as she could.

August had a crooked smile frozen on his face, but his mind was racing.
Gamble's heightened defense was helping him against the Phanpy's attacks, but the Nincada's own moves weren't doing too much to Mesa herself, particularly after Sadie focused on Mesa's defense as well. August was seriously contemplating switching out to another Pokemon that may do more damage to the Phanpy.
But the pointed stones from Stealth Rock were floating ominously in the air...
"Keep it up, Gamble," August said, deciding to be patient for a little longer. "Sand Attack and another Scratch."
Gamble rolled back to his feet after being hit with the other Slam attack, kicking up sand once again at Mesa.

Happiness: Mesa 1 (5/5), Rico 1 (5/5), Nova 1 (5/5)August was sticking with the strategy of having his Pokemon lower Mesa's accuracy and chipping away at the Phanpy's HP. Sadie retaliated by commanding Mesa to use another Slam attack.
At this rate, though, they'd be battling all day. If there was a way to force August to switch out his Pokemon...
Sadie took a brief moment before her mind was made up when Mesa missed her next Slam, sprawling to the side because of the remnants of the Sand Attack. "Mesa, return," Sadie said, recalling her Phanpy for the time being. Mesa still had a decent amount of health should she need to be called out again. Against a part Ground-type opponent, Sadie opted to toss out Nova.
Her Meditite stretched in the light and glanced curiously at the floating stones around before bringing her attention to Gamble. She appeared to brace herself, realizing she was in a battle.

August grinned when Sadie's Phanpy missed Gamble -- and even his Nincada trilled in excitement or mocking his opponent -- with her next Slam attack, but it faded when Sadie recalled her Phanpy and sent out a Meditite.
A shiny Meditite, at that. Where the hell did a new Ascua trainer get that? Perhaps it came with her from Hoenn.
Nevertheless, this presented a new set of problems. If Gamble had any decent Bug-type moves, he probably would be fine against Meditite's Psychic-half, but it had any Fighting-type moves, those would trump Gamble's part Ground-typing... Even if he switched out, there was the matter of the floating stones from Stealth Rock...
"Gamble, keep it going," August said. Harden wouldn't do much against any possible Psychic-type moves, but he could continue to lower the accuracy of Sadie's Pokemon. "Sand Attack and Scratch."
The Nincada gave a trill and obliged.

Happiness: Mesa 2 (1/5), Rico 2 (1/5), Nova 2 (1/5)Despite Sadie switching Pokemon, August's strategy remained the same. His Nincada tossed sand at Nova and scuttled close enough to use Scratch on the Meditite.
Sadie couldn't blame August, she supposed, although she was trying to force him to switch Pokemon. Lowering stats to put yourself at an advantage was common.
Still, Sadie commanded Nova, "Confusion," and hoped the Meditite would be able to pull it off.
The Meditite glowed, a soft pinkish aura emitted from her, as she tried to lock onto the Nincada with the Psychic-type move. It should take a decent chunk of HP off the part Ground-type Pokemon if it worked.

The Confusion hit true, and Gamble tried to shake off what seemed to be a dizzying feeling. August took a brief moment to gauge how his Nincada was doing health-wise and figured that it was still okay to battle for just a little longer.
August stuck with the same strategy, hoping that knocking down his opponent's accuracy would help the battle stretch along in his favor.
"Sand Attack," he said again, "the Scratch."
Gamble did just that, having started to move before August had even finished speaking.
Maybe August should look up the kinds of moves that a Nincada could learn...

Happiness: Mesa 2 (2/5), Rico 2 (2/5), Nova 2 (2/5)August's Pokemon continuously using Sand Attack was annoying as hell, but Sadie couldn't fault him for his strategy. Both Pokemon were still a little young, it seemed, so lowering the opponent's stats was smart.
Still, if Nova could dish out a couple of more Confusions, then the Nincada may fall... It was still their best attack.
Sadie's Meditite shook herself, trying to dislodge the sand that had been thrown into her eyes, before getting hit with the Scratch attack. At Sadie's command, Nova tried to use another Confusion.

August tried not to outwardly show any grimace when the Confusion hit Gamble again. Gamble still seemed okay, but he was definitely getting tired.
Granted, August still had another Pokemon in his pocket. He had the advantage of knowing Sadie's two Pokemon, both of whom had hits in on them, while August's second Pokemon would be fresh out of the pokeball.
August eyed the pointed stones floating around the makeshift arena, but decided to take the plunge.
"Gambit, return." August recalled his Nincada and, after a brief moment, tossed out his Ralts. "Let's go, Roulette."
The Ralts appeared with a... yawn. Not exactly the most intimidating entrance, and it absolutely did not help when she was hit immediately with the Stealth Rock trap. August winced on her behalf, but did call out, "Double Team," to try to help his Pokemon raise her evasiveness.

Happiness: Mesa 2 (3/5), Rico 2 (3/5), Nova 2 (3/5)He finally switched Pokemon, and Sadie immediately started trying to strategize against a Ralts. The Stealth Rock would have done normal damage to it, and its typing was resistant to both of Nova's typings and Mesa's type.
Sadie's team wasn't in the best place, offensive-wise against August's Pokemon. Her hope was that his Pokemon were both still fairly young as well.
"Nova," Sadie said, "use Pound."
Nova charged forward, doing her best to ignore the Double Team, to smack her opponent. Ralts as a species would most likely have better special stats than physical defense, which is what Sadie is hoping for.

And Sadie switched up her Pokemon's attacks, opting to go after Roulette's no-doubt lower physical defense than try to use any special moves on her. Despite both the Meditite's accuracy being lowered and Roulette's heightened evasiveness, the Pound attack still hit.
August kept his poker face on, but his mind was racing.
"Draining Kiss," he commanded, hoping that not only would Roulette take out a chunk of the Meditite's HP but also recover her own.

Happiness: Mesa 2 (4/5), Rico 2 (4/5), Nova -8 (3/5 - paused/fainted)Sadie's thrill at seeing Nova's Pound hit the Ralts -- Roulette, August had called it -- was short-lived. While it was great Nova had been able to hit her opponent despite her lowered accuracy, Roulette's Draining Kiss was too strong.
Sadie wasn't sure how well she kept her face expressionless as disappointment and sympathy washed over her when she saw Nova waver before fainting.
"Great try, Nova," Sadie said as she recalled her Meditite. "Take a good rest."
Sadie had no choice but to send Mesa back out, who didn't seem to mind. Of course, Mesa's Ground-type wouldn't do as well against a Ralts's typing, but if Sadie could take advantage of the Ralts having a lower physical defense and could ramp up a move...
"Mesa, use Rollout," Sadie commanded, and the Phanpy was all too eager to oblige.
