Levels Please read on for a guide on how gaining levels work here on Gaia Island. - Pokemon grow based on experience points, and the experience points are based on the Pokemon's level. Pokemon will need as many experience points as its level -- a level 10 Pikachu will need 10 experience points to grow to level 11, then it will need 11 points to grow to level 12, and so on.
- Pokemon gain experience points by defeating other Pokemon in battle. The winning Pokemon gains the same amount of experience points as the level of the defeated opponent -- a level 10 Pikachu will gain 6 experience points for defeating a level 6 Spearow, for example.
- If multiple Pokemon work together to defeat an opponent, the experience points will be split evenly among the victors. For example, a Pikachu gets help from a Squirtle in defeating a level 15 Charmander. Half of 15 is 7.5, so rounding up will grant Pikachu and Squirtle 8 experience points each.
- Points do carry over into the next level -- that level 10 Pikachu defeating a level 12 Magikarp will gain 12 experience points, 10 to level up to level 11 and 2 points leftover to help its way to level 12.
- Experience points will be gained against wild Pokemon even if the wild Pokemon is caught.
- Other than battle, Pokemon may gain experience points in the following ways:
- Rare Candy will help a Pokemon reach the next level. Rare Candies work in the sense that each will give the Pokemon enough experience to reach the next level with 0 leftover points towards the level after that. A Pokemon with 1/10 points or 8/10 to level 11 will then have 0/11 points to reach level 12 after eating a Rare Candy. The Rare Candies are therefore more effectively used at the beginning of a level.
- Exp. Candies will give a set amount of points depending on the size.
- Exp. Candy XS = 10 points
- Exp. Candy S = 20 points
- Exp. Candy M = 30 points
- Exp. Candy L = 40 points
- Exp. Candy XL = 50 points
- The Lucky Egg item, after one is bought from the Outlets, will double the experience points of the Pokemon holding the item earns after participating in a battle.
- The Exp. Share item, after one completes the associated quest to earn the item, will grant any non-participating Pokemon in the trainer's current party half of the amount of the winning experience points. Pokemon that did participate in the battle will earn the normal amount of experience points as warranted by the battle.
- Experience points and levels may also be given out by the moderators' discretion based on the members' RPing, or awarded in giveaways as prizes.

Battles & Moves We are a low-stat based Pokemon site, meaning we use battle calculators as a guide on which way a battle will go rather than meticulously calculating every stat. The honor-system is implemented on the site, hoping that everyone here can play fairly so we do not have to incorporate a more complicated battle system. - Please note that we are currently using Sword and Shield movesets and TMs.
- On this site, Pokemon can learn up to six moves. Upon learning a seventh move, the trainer may choose which of the six moves to replace.
- HMs/ride pagers do not exist on our site. Those moves should be more instinctual for Pokemon, such as birds flying or Water-types surfing. Common sense is your friend in most cases, but the following rules should be adhered when using these moves:
- Fly: The Pokemon flying should weigh more than the trainer they are carrying. Trainers are only able to Fly to previous towns they have visited.
- Surf: The Pokemon surfing should weigh more than the trainer they are carrying. While surfing Pokemon can carry their trainers in any large body of water, the Pokemon surfing will not be able to participate in any battles.
- Cut, Dive, and Strength: Three password-protected boards -- Berry Field in Route 3, Kea Islands in Route 8, and Mount Hotstreak in Hotfoot Trail -- are in the Ascua region that house areas with more exploration and rarer Pokemon that a member may discover with the the help of an appropriate Pokemon using Cut, Dive, or Strength, respectively. The character needs to describe a Pokemon using the move well enough for a mod to PM the member the current password in order to access the area. These are optional sub-boards.
- Teleport: While technically not an HM/ride page move, Teleport is able to be used outside of battle as opposed to just being used as a way to escape a wild Pokemon battle. Outside of battle, a Pokemon can teleport its trainer to the last Pokemon Center they had visited.
- Trainers can only battle with the Pokemon in their current party, up to six Pokemon while on the road. All characters have a PC -- whether it is connected to Professor Cypress's lab or to the Rancher's own ranch -- and we ask that members RP when their character is switching out Pokemon. All Pokemon Centers are equipped with the technology to access the trainers' PCs.
- For wild Pokemon battles, a mod will post an introduction for the wild Pokemon encounter (further detailed in this thread). The member will then take control of the wild Pokemon for their next post, describing the battle between their Pokemon and the wild one. Their post will end with the attempt of having the wild Pokemon faint, running away from the wild Pokemon entirely, or tossing out a pokeball to catch the wild Pokemon. The mod will determine if the run away or catch is successful. If the Pokemon is caught, the member must add the Pokemon bio to his/her/their accepted character thread.
- For character vs character battles, it is helpful for all to include your Pokemon's information and stats, such as its HP bar, level, moves, and abilities. (Please keep in mind that members may forego some of these guidelines if the two members discuss and plan out who wins before RPing the battle.)
- On your post, you may use one attacking move and one non-attacking move. Non-attacking moves include using an item, a stat-boosting move, or switching a Pokemon.
- Moves that take two turns (such as Solar Beam or Dig) will still take two posts (starting/charging the move in the first post, then completing it in the second), and the Pokemon will only be able to couple completing the move with a non-attack move.
- Dodging is considered a non-attack move. It may only be used once every four turns, and cannot be used against moves that cannot miss. Likewise, if the opponent uses a move/an ability that guarantees a successful hit for their next move (such as Lock-On or No Guard), a dodge cannot be used.
- If a Pokemon move has an added effect to it, such as afflicting a status condition, play fair. Use the tools on RANDOM.ORG to see if your Pokemon would be afflicted with the status condition. For instance, if your Pokemon was hit with a move that had 30% chance of inflicting the Burn Status, have the Random site generate a number between 1 and 100. If the number is 30 or less, then your Pokemon has a burn.
- Status afflictions will play out as follows in battle:
- Poison and burn will cause a Pokemon to lose 5% of its HP per turn.
- When a Pokemon is "badly poisoned," it will lose an additional 1% of its HP after every turn (first turn will lose 5%, second turn will lose 6%, third turn will lose 7%, etc.).
- Paralyzed and sleeping Pokemon will have a 60% chance of attacking/waking up on their turn.
- Sleeping Pokemon will automatically wake up on the fourth turn and may attack if they do not wake up beforehand.
- Frozen Pokemon will remain frozen until it is cured with an item, hit with a Fire-type move, or Sunny Day/strong sunlight is activated. As such, Pokemon with the Drought ability are immune to being frozen.
- Confused Pokemon will have a 30% chance of damaging themselves instead of their opponent for a random 2 to 5 turns.
- Pokemon will not automatically heal after every battle. Likewise, unless the Pokemon has the Natural Cure ability, the Pokemon will keep their status afflictions after being returned to their pokeball. Outside of battle, status afflictions will play out as follows:
- Poison and burn will each deal one damage point per the trainer's IC posts. It is possible for the Pokemon to faint from the status conditions outside of battle.
- Paralyzed, sleeping, and frozen Pokemon will need to be cured with an item or at a Pokemon Center. It is possible for a sleeping Pokemon to join another battle and wake up during the course of it.
- Confusion is cured as soon as the Pokemon is returned to its pokeball.
- Due to the site's nature, PP for moves do not exist. Play fair with moves -- generally, the more powerful the move, the fewer opportunities a Pokemon will be able to pull them off. Below is a table detailing the effects moves and abilities that directly deal with PP in the games, as well as other mechanic-centric abilities and moves, will play out on our site:
Ability/Move | Effect on Gaia Island | Early Bird (Ability) | Pokemon will have a 75% chance to awaken from sleep as opposed to 60% | Forewarn (Ability) | Raises the Pokemon's evasiveness by 1 stage | Frisk (Ability) | The opposing Pokemon cannot use its held item | Grudge (Move) | If the user faints, the move that fainted it is disabled for the remainder of the battle | Illuminate (Ability) | Raises the likelihood of finding Pokemon of a higher rarity class | Pressure (Ability) | Wild Pokemon will be more likely to call for help; if the "lead" Pokemon (out of its pokeball) has this ability, wild Pokemon will most likely be higher leveled | Spite (Move) | The last move used by the opponent Pokemon is disabled for 4 turns |
- When making a battle post, some helpful links and codes are below:
- Random.org
- Pokemon Damage Calculator
- HP Bar:
[div style="width:100px;height:10px;background-color:green;"][/div] It looks like this, a full HP bar: You can change the "width:100px" depending on how much HP the Pokemon has left. You may also change the "color:green;" area of the code to accurately represent your Pokemon's health. For example, if I switch out the 100px for 15px and change green for red, I would get this:
- Battle Code:
[div align="center"][font size="3"]Pokemon Name[/font] [image code here] [div style="width:100px;height:10px;background-color:green;"][/div]
type | gender | ability

Evolution While the majority of Pokemon evolve via leveling up, there are some Pokemon that evolve in different ways. Evolution stones, trading, the Happiness factor, time of day, and special moves are other ways for Pokemon to evolve. - The Evolutionary stones (and other evolutionary items) may be obtained in the Outlets. The description of each stone details what Pokemon species benefits from them. One evolutionary stone/item may be used multiple times.
- Traded Pokemon will also be given the option to evolve by normal level-up (at least 10 levels after its first evolution) rather than only being able to evolve with the stimulation from being traded. the Pokemon can evolve before this 10-level mark if the trainers wish to trade it before then. Some Pokemon have specific items to hold in order to evolve when traded, and these items can be used as regular evolutionary items instead.
- The Happiness Factor is practiced on this site. Please see that specific article to read more about it, as well as see the Pokemon that evolve based on happiness and love.
- Time of day and gender are also a couple of evolution factors. For instance, if a thread takes place at night, a happy Eevee will evolve into Umbreon instead of Espeon, while Combee will only evolve if it is female. Tyrogue, in the games, evolves into either Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, or Hitmontop depending on its stats. On this site, it will be up to the member as to which Pokemon Tyrogue evolves into (or the member could ask a mod to randomize the evolution).
- Members will always have the choice of whether or not they want their Pokemon to evolve. When your Pokemon is ready to evolve, the moderator will let you know in the thread, but it is the member who decides whether the evolution process completes or not.
