He was a mere shadow, darting in and out among the trees that lined the edge of the ranch. Ace's attacks were near perfection as they were, but one could never stop practicing. There was no telling when someone stronger would appear to be his next opponent.
Truth be told, the Greninja didn't get too many worthy foes. Of course, he continued to practice with the rest of his teammates, most of the Pokemon having been used to battling for a living before settling down on a ranch with their trainer. Kristen was an impressive trainer, that much Ace could admit, and he had gotten some admirable workouts with the Pokemon that had been under her care when she had mainly been a battler.
A splintered crack appeared in the trunk of one of the nearest trees after Ace had sliced it with a Water Shuriken.
Perhaps Ace could find someone willing to have an impromptu battle, someone he could beat and prove to Kristen that he was more than capable of being one of her top partners.... Tags: Mod Kurt for experience points, please? And @ninja, probably still open! Pokemon Happiness: Trek - MaxedTrek wondered if all Greninja were as strange as Ace. That could all just be Trek's opinion, but the Grovyle couldn't forget the mysterious way the Greninja had just appeared at the old Gaia Ranch. There was little to no explanation as to why Ace, a Kalos native, had been around the Sinnoh region, but Kristen hadn't felt that there was any reason to say no to Ace when he wanted to join the ranch. The Greninja had obviously moved with the rest of the team to the island, and still seemed aloof from everyone else.
Unless Kristen was around. Ace was always conscious whenever their trainer was about, as if he could impress her with his prowess...
Trek and Ace were always at some sort of odds with each other, not that Trek tried to foster it. He supposed he should continue to try to understand the Greninja.
"Preparing for the cold seasons?" Trek asked mildly when Ace splintered the trunk of a tree. "It's still a while before we'll need the firewood.
"Everything alright?" The question was casual, Trek unsure as to whether or not Ace would confide anything to him. Perhaps if Mona or Neptune were around...

Ace was proud of himself for not flinching at the Grovyle appearing. Of course Trek would show up, as if summoned by Ace's thoughts themselves.
"Not particularly," Ace said lowly in response to Trek's question about the cold seasons. The Greninja supposed that he shouldn't be killing trees without a reason, and he hoped that Trek wasn't the type to start lecturing on the ethics of it.
"Fine, yes," was Ace's response to the next question. It was true, Ace supposed -- there was nothing in particular that was bothering him. He glanced at the Grovyle, an idea swirling in his mind.
"Perhaps you'd be game for a practice battle?" Ace asked, pivoting on his feet to fully face the Grovyle. Ace was about twice the height and weight of the Grovyle, yet he had never bested Trek in a battle. Perhaps if he had, Ace may climb the list of Kristen's best partners... Tags: @ninja Pokemon Happiness: Trek - MaxedTrek scrutinized the Greninja as Ace answered his questions. The responses seemed to be both normal and strange for Ace, as if those were the exact responses that Trek had expected, yet the tone was off. It was a similar tone that Ace usually saved for Trek, but there was still something that made Trek extra curious about the Water- and Dark-type.
Although Trek wasn't one for cutting down trees without a reason (perhaps it was the Grass-type in him), he didn't lecture Ace. Instead, Ace turned around and offered Trek a chance to battle practice with him.
Not seeing any reason to decline, Trek rolled his shoulders and relaxed his posture. "Why not?" Trek said, lightly bouncing from foot to foot. "You move first."

Trek did not take long to agree to the battle practice and Ace nodded once at the Grovyle's offer for the Greninja to make the first move.
"As you wish," Ace said simply before rapidly disappearing and reappearing at Trek's side with a Feint Attack.

Tags: @ninja, that sounds fine! We'll tag Kurt near the end of the battle to dole out experience points as needed, and I'll have Kris appear with potions and stuff too. Pokemon Happiness: Trek - MaxedThe Feint Attack wasn't something that Trek could dodge. The Grovyle was sucker-punched hard and he was knocked across the clearing. Trek flipped himself over in mid-air to slide into a land on his feet. Ace had gotten stronger from when he had first joined the ranch. A few of those moves, and Trek wouldn't last long in the battle at all.
With a gleam in his eye, the Grovyle focused on gathering more strength and sapping the Greninja of his energy with a Giga Drain.

Ace was pleased with himself for making the Grovyle skid across the clearing, but it was short-lived. Ace had presumed that Trek would come right back with his own physical attack, such as Leaf Blade or Slam, but instead Trek used Giga Drain.
With Trek's higher experience and type advantage, Ace was nearly done after the one Giga Drain, the move bringing Ace to his knees. The Greninja could muster up the strength to do another attack, but it wouldn't be enough to take down Trek, not after Trek regained his strength from the draining Grass-type move.
"Enough," Ace said, getting to his feet once more. Unless he wanted to beg Kristen for a potion, Ace would need a quiet place to rest. "I... You're still too strong..." Tags: Kris Parker, well, that battle was short-lived! xD Since Ace gave up, will Mod Kurt still give Trek the full 50 experience points? I'm hoping that we can still continue the thread, . Tags: @ninja, whoops. ^^' I'm good with continuing the thread, sorry that the battle wasn't too exciting, ! I'll use/buy a suitable potion for Ace in Kris's PC so he's good to go after this thread. Pokemon Happiness: Trek - MaxedTrek hadn't expected the battle to be that short, but he supposed he wasn't too surprised. Walking closer to the Greninja, Trek looked up at the Water- and Dark-type.
"What do you mean still too strong?" the Grovyle asked, his arms crossed. "Why are you so focused on being able to defeat me in a battle? We're on the same team."
After a moment's pause, Trek added, "Aren't we...?"

Trek came closer to Ace, the Grovyle not being intimidated in the slightest at the height the Greninja had over him. If their situations had been reversed and Ace had Trek's strength, Ace supposed he wouldn't have been troubled either.
At the questions, however, Ace gave a long sigh. "Yes, we are on the same team," he relented, "yet having another be our master's top partner is irksome to me. With my previous trainer, I was always right beside him.
"Perhaps it's mostly because I understand your bond with Kristen," Ace said. "I... miss the bond I had." Tags: Kris Parker, *thumbs up to Mod Kurt* Happiness Gained: Ace - 0 (5/5) Current HP: 10%

Tags: @ninja Pokemon Happiness: Trek - MaxedTrek listened as Ace actually opened up to him. The Grovyle had always known the Greninja had a bit of a rivalry with him, but Trek had never understood why until now.
"You have been with us for some time now," Trek said, "but your bond with Kristen isn't nearly as strong as the bond with your old trainer, is it? What was your old trainer like?
"You are valuable to our team, to Kristen, you know," Trek continued. "I'm sorry if you feel otherwise." After a pause, the Grovyle gestured for the pair to walk closer to the ranch. "Let's get you a potion or something while we talk."

"Of course it's not," Ace said regarding his bond with Kristen, following just a step behind Trek as the Grovyle led the way back to Gaia Ranch. "You have the honor of having the strongest bond with her. The Gardevoir and Gallade are right behind you, are they not?"
Ace paused as he thought of his old trainer. "He was... quiet," the Greninja eventually started, "but a good man. He cared about his Pokemon and always did his best to do right by us. We had a bit of a difficult time making a living... My teammate and I weren't strong enough to help him in the Kalos Gym Challenge.
"We tried leaving Kalos, but my teammate and myself were released," Ace continued, "when we accidentally got separated from our trainer. I ended up in Sinnoh and, as you're aware, found your little Gaia Ranch."
He stopped his story there, unwilling to say much else. Glancing at Trek, Ace asked, "You were Kristen's first partner, were you not?" Tags: @ninja, totally open for that! Pokemon Happiness: Trek - Maxed"It's not..." Trek paused, trying to plan out his words. "I suppose, yes, it's true that I would have the strongest bond with Kristen, but it's not supposed to be a contest. Kristen is a wonderful trainer and she cares for us all. If anyone's bond, as you say, with her is stronger than another's, it'd probably only be because of how long we've each been with her.
"Yes, I was her first partner," the Grovyle continued, "and Mona was the second addition to our team, so we've been with Kristen for quite some time. Leo actually came in much later and, in my opinion, only really agreed to join the team because he met and liked Mona."
Ace spoke of his old trainer, not revealing too many details, but Trek could hear the wistfulness on the Greninja's tone.
"I'm sorry you were separated," Trek said. "I can't begin to imagine not being with Kristen and the rest of our team... By the sounds of it, your trainer did not mean to release your teammate and yourself. What happened with your teammate?"

Ace tilted his head as Trek seemed to falter with his words. The Grovyle always seemed so collected. To hear him not able to articulate his thoughts right away seemed odd.
Trek spoke praises of Kristen, as was rightfully expected, but Ace was surprised to hear that Leo hadn't been one of the first partners on Kristen's team. The Greninja quirked a smile. "Leo joined due to infatuation? That's... rather amusing, actually."
Ace shook his head. "I don't believe my trainer meant to release us, but I believe he had wanted us to have our best chance right before we were separated... We were all supposed to stay together but circumstances prevented that...
"My teammate was a Ninjask called Gamble," Ace said. "When we were released, it was... very confusing. It became apparent that neither of our species were too well-known in Sinnoh, especially me. With the commotion of other humans and Pokemon, we ended up getting separated as well. I like to believe that Gamble had attempted to fly after our trainer, but I'm unsure as to his fate."
