Mod Kris/Mod Kurt for wild encounters. Happiness: Mesa (5/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (1/10)It seemed like most regions had a short Route 1 out of the sleepy little town that held the region's lab. Like it was a requirement or something.
Sadie vaguely wondered why many regions (okay, so the few regions Sadie had traveled through) seemed to have the leading professor's lab be in such a small town. Wouldn't the lab have enough prestige to be in a bustling city with the latest technology?
Then again, perhaps it had to do with all the PC Pokemon from trainers that the labs tended to care for while the trainers traveled. Labs in the smaller towns tended to monopolize many of the acres of land available for the Pokemon to have plenty of room to live.
Sadie readjusted her backpack, made sure the Meditite egg was still good and snug in its little pouch, and marched onward. If there were any wild Pokemon out and about, Sadie was ready to give her Phanpy a little exercise. It'll be good not only to train up a bit, see what Mesa could do, but to also see how well Sadie and Mesa could work together right off the bat.

Route 1 was small but it was teeming with Pokemon life, most of the young variety.
A Spewpa was inching along one of the branches of a nearby tree, not paying Sadie any mind at all. It almost lost its balance when a Zigzagoon knocked into the tree, shaking the trunk and limbs before darting up the bark.
A bit ahead of Sadie was a Wooloo rolling on its way across the path. It didn't seem to know where exactly where it was going. Rather, it was rolling across the path, around a tree or two, then rolling back across the path the other way. Sadie Fox

Mod Kurt, going after the Wooloo. Happiness: Mesa 1 (1/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (2/10)Sadie nearly tripped while trying to avoid the Wooloo's erratic rolls.
The trainer jumped away, unsure if the Wooloo itself would try to attack her, but it seemed like it was having a grand old time just rolling along. Sadie watched it for a few moments before pulling out her Pokedex. With a beep, the device stated, "Wooloo, the Sheep Pokemon. Its curly fleece is such an effective cushion that this Pokemon could fall off of a cliff and stand right back up at the bottom, unharmed."
Sadie raised an eyebrow at the description before glancing back at the Pokemon still rolling along and doing figure-eights on the path. A Pokemon with such a high natural defense may work well on her team.
With her mind made up, Sadie tossed out her Phanpy and said, "Let's go, Mesa. Use Slam."
Sadie held her ground when her Phanpy glanced back at her, apparently unimpressed with the sudden command. Sadie was reminded that she had new partners this time around. It would still take a bit before her Pokemon fully trusted her.
Nevertheless, Mesa seemed to catch sight of the Wooloo and geared herself up for a fight. With a battle cry, Mesa rolled and used Slam against the Wooloo.

The Slam knocked Wooloo right off its course, and the Pokemon gave a startled cry. With its fluffy coat, the Wooloo bounced a couple of times from the momentum before stopping to give itself a shake.
The Wooloo glared at the Phanpy and Growled before launching itself into a Tackle attack of its own.

Mod Kurt, trying to capture the Wooloo Happiness: Mesa 1 (2/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (3/10)Battles between young Pokemon were either exciting or the same two moves being swapped back and forth. Mesa and the Wooloo's battle was of the latter variety.
Mesa did well, all things considered, and Sadie was thankful for the inherited moves her Phanpy had gotten from her parents, but the short battle mostly consisted of Slam and Tackle attacks being traded. The Wooloo apparently knew some strategy (or had a good sense of self-preservation) in that it used Growl and Defense Curl occasionally to help hinder Mesa's stats or boost its own. It confirmed that Sadie would like it on her team. A strong Normal-type to go with Mesa's Ground-type and the Meditite's (whenever it hatched) dual Psychic and Fighting.
"Mesa, hold back," Sadie said after a couple of rounds of Slam and Tackle attacks. Her Phanpy merely glanced at her and seemed ready to give the Wooloo another Slam attack, but Sadie beat Mesa to it by tossing a Pokeball at the Wooloo. The Pokeball bounced off the Wooloo's fluffy coat, the wild Pokemon disappearing into the device as a beam of red light, and Sadie waited to see if it would shake or stand still to signify capture.

The Wooloo saw the pokeball coming and hunkered down, closing his eyes and bracing himself for the hit. The ball barely shook before stilling, signaling that the catch was successful.

Mod Kurt, yay for the capture! Happiness: Mesa 1 (3/5); Rico (1/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (4/10)Sadie took a deep breath when the pokeball stilled, signaling the capture. She hadn't been worried about her skills in capturing a Pokemon -- she had done that plenty of times in her past, after all -- but considering this was her first capture with her first, new partner in a new region... Well, it was a relief that she was able to still perform one of the most basic functions of being a trainer.
"Good job, Mesa," she said to her Phanpy as she picked up the Wooloo's pokeball. Mesa huffed, perhaps a little annoyed that she hadn't been able to finish the battle, but otherwise seemed alright. The pair would continue down the route and see what else they could find.

Going further down the path, there were a few snaps and yips from the bushes and shrubs on either side of Sadie and Mesa. From one side there was a Poochyena while the other side had a Yungoos.
The pair of young Pokemon appeared to be yelling at each other about something. It could be due to the fact that one of the nearby berry bushes was rather picked clean -- there were only two ripe Oran berries sitting atop the bush without bites taken out of them -- or maybe one was too close to the other's territory. Regardless, it was unclear what would happen if either of the young Pokemon were distracted by Sadie and Mesa.
On the tree branches above the yelling Pokemon was another Spewpa, this one much more engaged in what was going on below it. It seemed quite curious as to the sounds coming from the path. Sadie Fox

Mod Kurt, used a potion to fully heal Rico and engaging in a double battle with the Poochyena and Yungoos. Happiness: Mesa 1 (4/5); Rico (2/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (5/10)Sadie stared at the Poochyena and Yungoos yelling at each other from across the pathway. Both wild Pokemon species were familiar to her, but she nonetheless took out her Pokedex to see if there was anything additional she could learn about their Ascuan counterparts.
The Pokedex chirped out the entries for both ("Poochyena, the Bite Pokemon. A Pokémon with a persistent nature, it chases its chosen prey until the prey becomes exhausted. Yungoos, the Loitering Pokemon. It wanders around in a never-ending search for food. At dusk, it collapses from exhaustion and falls asleep on the spot.") and Sadie just hoped that the wild Pokemon weren't paying any attention to the handheld computer. Since the pair still seemed to be shouting at each other, Sadie glanced down at Mesa and briefly wondered if her Phanpy would be able to take both on by herself. She only took a few seconds to ultimately decide that would be a dangerous idea. Mesa certainly looked up to it, gazing at both of the wild Pokemon with disdain, but Sadie didn't want to take that chance.
Instead, she kept herself and Mesa down the path for a few moments longer and released the Wooloo. The Wooloo shook himself and looked up at Sadie in slight bewilderment, particularly when Sadie said, "Alright... Rico. I'm going to call you Rico. Hold still."
Sadie used a potion she had gotten from Greenberry Labs to heal up Rico so Mesa would have a partner against the two wild Pokemon. Once Rico was all set, Sadie said, "Okay, you two. We're going to work together on this. Mesa, use Slam on the Poochyena. Rico, Tackle the Yungoos."

The two wild Pokemon were caught by surprise at being knocked out of their bushes. The two tumbled, took a second to reorientate themselves, and realized that there were strangers that had attacked them rather than each other.
The Poochyena and Yungoos then retaliated on Mesa and Rico respectively with their own Tackle attacks.

Mod Kurt Happiness: Mesa 1 (5/5); Rico (3/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (6/10)It was fortunate that her Pokemon had a little more strength on their side, and Mesa's Slam move inherited from her parents really helped their side for this battle between young Pokemon. Sadie couldn't help but imagine what kind of explosive and exciting battles she'd be able to have once her Pokemon were grown more.
She needed to focus on the now, though.
Both of the wild Pokemon hit true with their respective Tackle attacks, although neither seemed to do much damage. Mesa was pretty sturdy due to her species, and the Yungoos nearly bounced off of Rico's thick coat. The battle itself shouldn't take long.
"Switch it up," Sadie said. "Slam on Yungoos and Tackle on Poochyena."
Mesa gave a derivative snort, but listened enough, cutting off Rico in order to Slam into the Yungoos. Rico took a brief second to get his bearings and figure out what was going on before using his own attack on the Poochyena. After another attack or two, both of the wild Pokemon were down for the count.

With both the Poochyena and the Yungoos being defeated, the remaining two Oran berries atop of the bush were up for grabs. Even the Spewpa, despite how curious it had seemed about the goings-on below it, had been spooked enough by the battle and disappeared.
What's this? Looks like Mesa also picked up a tiny mushroom after the battle.
The small route, at the moment, seemed to have a quiet spell. Sadie Fox, Mesa gained 2 exp. points from Poochyena and grew to level 6! Mesa learned Flail! Rico gained 2 exp. points from Poochyena! Mesa gained 2 exp. points from Yungoos! Rico gained 2 exp. points from Yungoos and grew to level 5!

Mod Kurt, yay for level ups! Thanks for modding! Happiness: Mesa 5 (1/5); Rico 3 (4/5) Meditite Egg to Hatch: (7/10)"Good job, guys," Sadie said to her two Pokemon, double-checking them and seeing how they fared. Rico gave a little baa, perhaps proud of his work and her praise, while Mesa straightened up, her trunk curled around a little mushroom. After a little coaxing, Sadie took the mushroom -- it wouldn't do anything for the Phanpy -- and traded it with an Oran berry from the nearby bush.
She also gave Rico a berry to hold, just in case it could be eaten in the heat of battle if needed. While neither seemed inclined to eat their berries right now, Sadie was certain both could use a nice rest.
Fortunately, a Pokemon Center was situated just outside of the woodlands, and the building was right on the horizon. Readjusting her pack and the Meditite egg, Sadie recalled both Mesa and Rico and made her way over to the Pokemon Center
