The other trainer gave Nate a smile, even if Ginger the Vulpix still seemed a cross between amused and suspicious for finding Nate behind a bush. Regardless, the Vulpix seemed to pay Nate no heed as she began to wash her paws and face while her trainer spoke.
"No problem," the trainer said, reaching over to give a friendly handshake. "Name's Tomas, from Newsnow Village. I'm going to be a coordinator. We're doing a little training as well, trying to bolster our team and all, but we got a little time before reaching Pinewood City. Have you gone to Falldale yet to meet Charlotte? She's a really nice lady and actually loves it when new gym challengers beat her. She gives a good fight, or so I've heard, of course. No member of the League is going to go easy on challengers, heh."
Tomas seemed more than happy to keep talking to a fellow trainer. As Tomas gabbed, he brought out his newly-caught Sewaddle to spray a bit of Potion on his Pokemon, making sure she was healthy again. @natefyre

Mod Kurt Just a heads up Nate will engage in one more battle whether it's with this Trainer or a Wild Pokemon later, before meeting up with Kris's character in the woods! He will heal up his Pokemon before then, though. Status: Intrigued To Nate's delight, the trainer was very friendly and actually quite helpful giving Nate some tips about the town coming up, and that it had a gym, and about its Gym Leader. This gave Nate some much needed insight he was very grateful for. The friendly exchange caused Nate to be even more excited for what's to come. "Hi Tomas! It's a pleasure to meet you! Wow, a Coordinator huh? I don't think I see alot of Coordinators engage in battles like you do, you're a natural. I'm from the Hoenn Region. Mt. Pyre to be exact, I've come a long way to do the Gym Challenge and become a Champion here. To not only prove to my family that I can start a new life away from home, but also to be strong enough to start my own Pokemon Training Club or potentially be a Gym Leader myself, to show other Trainers the right way to raise Pokemon and be strong enough on their own to face any challenges ahead of them. Even ones that may be fueled by darkness." However cheesy Nate sounded saying all that out loud, it felt good to put those words into the universe. He never really had the chance to speak his intentions like that until now. He wanted to really spread his motives in the region and help other Trainers make good choices, not bad ones. "I know there are good and bad people out there in the world, as well as Pokemon that are used for criminal activities. And I want to make sure there are strong people and Pokemon around to stop it when it happens." His sense of justice was really showing now, and he showed it proudly. Having a father who used to be a criminal has truly awakened such a feeling inside him. He was not going to be like his dad by any means. Professing all these feelings were helpful in reminding him who not to be. Before things got perhaps too weird in conversation for Tomas, Nate tries to change the subject. "But enough about me. I know you're not a Gym Challenger like myself per say. And it's ok if it's not your thing, I can move on elsewhere in these woods to get some additional training done, however, does it fancy you to have a friendly Pokemon Battle with me Tomas?" It didn't hurt to ask for a battle, with an invitation that only would make either of them stronger. "I'll gladly follow your preferences if you'll oblige. One on One, or Two on Two. But I would ask no more than three Pokemon allowed for each of us, my others are still recovering from prior training you see. And if all that sounds good to you, we can battle. I won't be mad if you want to pass though!" Nate always wanted to give the option for a Trainer to duck out if they needed to. He knew others may have something else going on in the moment, but he never ignored an opportunity for a good battle. He happily awaited Tomas's response with an excited grin flashing on his face. One last battle before he heads back to the Pokemon Center would be all he needed for now to make him satisfied, whether it was with Tomas or perhaps a Wild Pokemon further down the line. He would have his fill yet again if he got one more good fight in. ___________________________________________ (Shadow) -Lvl. 08 - Knock Off, Screech, Ominous Wind, Night Shade - IC Happiness 2/5(Ruby) -Lvl. 06 - Tackle, Howl, - IC Happiness 2/5(Phantom) -Lvl. 06 - Scratch, Growl, Sand Attack, Fake Out, - IC Happiness 2/5(MoonClaw) -Lvl. 07 -Fling, Covet, Scratch, Baby Doll Eyes, Lick, Fake Tears - IC Happiness 2/5(Pericles) -Lvl. 08 - Tackle, Leer, Arm Thrust, Taunt - IC Happiness 2/5(Tatanka) -Lvl. 09 - Scratch, Growl, Branch Poke, Taunt, - IC Happiness 3/5

Tomas raised an eyebrow at Nate's comment about coordinators and battling. "You mentioned you're from Hoenn, right? Do they not have Contests there? Or maybe different rules? That'd be great to see Contests in a different region..." He trailed off for a moment, apparently pondering over this before remembering that he was in the middle of speaking. "I mean, here, battling is half of the competition in a Contest. Instead of just trying to end the battle as quickly as possible with the most powerful moves, though, the battles are judged by grace, style, and beauty. Gotta stay leveled up with the competition, ya know?"
He grinned as Nate told him about his own dream. "That sounds fantastic! Well, I hope you have a great time with the gym challenge here in Ascua. The League is pretty good, as young as it is. They've been doing well."
Nate then asked for a battle, but with no pressure either way. Tomas paused for a moment before glancing at Ginger, who looked more than alert for another fight.
"Yeah, why not?" Tomas said with a grin. "After all, I'll be battling other trainers in contests, so let's get a taste of that. How about a single battle, two vs two?"
With that, Tomas gestured to Sewaddle and said, "C'mon, Clover! You got this!"
The newly-named Clover seemed momentarily puzzled but dutifully crawled out before Tomas in the makeshift battle arena. @natefyre, perfect, that's what I figured. This'll be good practice for whenever you reach the gym leaders!

Mod Kurt Jolly good. I will let you this time actually reply and do the battle with me since it's an actual Trainer I am fighting (if it wasn't already gonna be like that anyway) Status: Excited Tomas asked about contests, and that was almost all but a fond memory for Nate. He never partook in those but Hoenn did in fact have them. "You're very right. Hoenn has contests, but I suppose me and my family never got into them. I honestly wouldn't be the right material to raise Pokemon properly for that. Battling for me is much more natural." Nate also thinks on the other side of the coin regarding battling. "Though I suppose some to this day may still find battling like a form of forced torture for Pokemon. I've heard all kinds of arguments against it. Putting them through pain and discomfort to get stronger. But then again, some Pokemon truly want that, and enjoy the adrenaline of a battle. It very much is also part of their nature." This is a topic Nate didn't have the energy to debate, but he pondered this often. "But I digress. I am glad to hear the league here is going to be a challenge. That's exciting! I bet I will learn and grow so much around here. And go back to Hoenn stronger than ever when I'm done." When Tomas then made the comment about agreeing to battle, Nate lit up with joy. "Oh boy! You wanna battle me? That really is good to hear! Single battle sounds like a fantastic idea. Let's give it a go!" Nate takes out a Poke Ball and tosses it into the air. Out comes Phantom giving off a tough vibe with a battle ready pose. Phantom standing on its legs with its claws out and gleaming. "You have to forgive me for choosing my more....how do you put it; feisty Pokemon. He really loves to battle a bit too much. Most Of my others are pretty wiped out. But I think you'll like their style of fighting either way! I'll let you make the first move!" Nate would have loved to send his lower level Pokemon for more training like Ruby and MoonClaw, but they needed to rest. So Phantom and Pericles will have to do for now. Nate was anxious to see how Tomas would handle a battle and awaited the first strike with great anticipation. ___________________________________________ (Shadow) -Lvl. 08 - Knock Off, Screech, Ominous Wind, Night Shade - IC Happiness 3/5(Ruby) -Lvl. 06 - Tackle, Howl, - IC Happiness 3/5(Phantom) -Lvl. 06 - Scratch, Growl, Sand Attack, Fake Out, - IC Happiness 3/5(MoonClaw) -Lvl. 07 -Fling, Covet, Scratch, Baby Doll Eyes, Lick, Fake Tears - IC Happiness 3/5(Pericles) -Lvl. 08 - Tackle, Leer, Arm Thrust, Taunt - IC Happiness 3/5(Tatanka) -Lvl. 09 - Scratch, Growl, Branch Poke, Taunt, - IC Happiness 4/5

"Oh, what a pretty kitty!" Tomas took a few seconds to coo over Phantom before getting his head in the game. Ginger was sitting by his side and tilted her head at the Purrloin's appearance, apparently not finding it as enthralling as her trainer.
"Alright, Clover," Tomas said, since Nate was giving him the go-ahead to make the first move. "Test things out with a Tackle!"
The Sewaddle did as he said, charging at Phantom with her head down in a Tackle as strong as she could muster.

Mod Kurt Level 8 eh....let's see if my level 6 kitty can manage! Not sure also, how Fake Out will work below in this sense and how likely it will cause a Pokemon to flinch? I also kinda winged it against Wild Pokemon so I will let you be the judge of its ability. What I would allow it to do is take one combat turn away from the opposing Pokemon if it hits. But in a fair sense I am sure it doesn't always have to inflict a flinching ailment. Status: Spry "PHANTOM DODGE IT!" The cat heard Nate's command and leaps into action out of the way and to the side of the attack. Phantom gives a devilish smirk and licks its paw as if unimpressed by the insect. "Phantom may not be the strongest Pokemon on my team, but it certainly has alot of battle experience and cunning." Nate was proud of how far the feline came in a short time proving itself as a powerful ally time and time again. And very loyal. "Alright Phantom! Retaliate with a FAKE OUT! If we're lucky the Sewaddle will flinch and lose some of it's combat ability if only for a moment to leave it open to attack again!" Phantom nods and front flips towards the insect then opens its arms with palms facing towards each other and attempts to clap the palms into the sides of the insect's head to cause a shuddering or flinching effect and temporarily paralyze it for a small amount of time to try and leave it open for another attack later. The move was not guaranteed to work, but if it did, it would give Nate a quick edge in battle. He had faith in all his Pokemon, and Phantom was one he just couldn't resist using in a battle. It was made for fast attacks and pristine agility rather balanced against any Pokemon. Where it lacked in power and strength it made up for in speed and wit. This was the type of Pokemon that would find a weakness and exploit it, or come up with a tactic on the fly to give it an advantage even against a stronger type. While the Fake Out didn't do too much damage to Clover, the move did succeed in making the Sewaddle flinch. It made Tomas's next command fall on deaf ears as Clover tried to shake off the attack and gave Phantom and his trainer another opening.
Clover | female | swarm Level: 8 Hold Item: none Tackle | String Shot | Bug Bite | ---- | ---- | ---- >> Fake Out took off 11% HP >> Clover flinched! @natefyre, the level 8 was randomized, . Since Fake Out is a priority move, it guarantees a flinch when it goes first during the first turn. Technically, in our RP, it was not the first turn/strike since you allowed the Sewaddle to make the first move, but I'll give the flinch since it was Phantom's first move.

Mod Kurt Noted! Glad to have a clear idea on its effects for PlaybyPost. Status: Fired Up Nate noticed the move actually worked and the opposing Pokemon flinched. There was easily room for another opening and Nate didn't waste a second. Phantom already noticed this and was ramping up for another attack. Seeing the cat's ferocity and eagerness, Nate instills its next orders. "Phantom, I can barely keep up with your energy, nice hustle! Use SAND ATTACK! Followed by a SCRATCH!" Phantom gets right to work. It opens its jaws and spews a stream of sand at the insect and then darts to the left and then the right of the opposing Pokemon and dashes at it with talons out Scratching its cheek with the best aim it could. It tried to leave no breathing room between the sand blast and the claw maneuver. Nate was trying to keep in mind that the Sewaddle was likely experiencing it's first Pokemon Battle under a Trainer's tutelage so he didn't want to overwhelm it per say, but he had to treat the other Trainer with respect and not hold back at the same time. Nate figured the Sewaddle however had a comeback just waiting to happen. "I must admit, for a freshly caught Pokemon, the Sewaddle is incredibly calm and level headed in a battle." Nate commended the bond that had already begun between him and the Sewaddle, and was excited to see how further the Sewaddle will develop in this battle and overtime as it accompanied the Coordinator further down the road. Tomas paused for an instant as the Purrloin used Sand Attack, getting sand in Clover's eyes. The Sewaddle did her best to shake off her disorientation, and she refocused when Tomas said, "Use String Shot! Slow it down!"
The Sewaddle shot out a sticky web in the hopes of making the Purrloin stand still just long enough for her to use Bug Bite as Tomas commanded next.
"Thanks," Tomas said in response to Nate's compliment on Clover's attitude towards her first battle. "Guess I got lucky, ha! I'm sure your Phantom is going to give the gym leaders a run for their money, too!"

Mod Kurt Status: Calm The little bug shot a sticky stream of webbing at Phantom who tried to pounce out of the way and Nate did not expect it to be so quickly heading his Pokemon's direction, so the move firmly sticks Phantom into place catching the bottom of one of its paws unexpectedly during mid motion when the cat was trying to dodge, and then enrapturing the other paw and circling around Phantom's two front legs. The cat meows in panic. "It's ok! Relax, and loosen up those muscles. This string won't last forever. Just slow you down some." Hearing this, Phantom takes a breath relaxing its leg muscles, and then using its sharp teeth rips away the string from its limbs. The Pokemon did feel a tad bit more sluggish after the move, unable to get all the residue entirely off, but as it tried to clean itself, the Sewaddle rushes in trying to nip at one of its freshly sticky legs and manages to get a Bug Bite in on the Purrloin! Phantom screeches in pain staggering backwards and hissing at the sneaky insect. The bite was quite direct and stung leaving a nasty red mark on the cat's leg. Nate grew a bit concerned. "Phantom, you ok!?" Phantom nods with a wince and then looks down at its injury briefly licking it. "No doubt this will surely slow you down some. But don't give up!" Nate pumps his right hand into a fist and commands the next few moves. "Phantom, get it with another SAND ATTACK! Then ride the sand stream and get in close for an additional Scratch for some added oomph!" Phantom used this infamous combo before and knew right away how to execute. The cat fired a long stream of sand from its mouth drenching the insect again with a Sand Attack followed by jumping onto the said blast of dirt dipping its paws into the stream and letting it propel him forward and when it was up close and personal, Phantom jutted out its claws and rose its paw to strike the insect harshly across its face with another Scratch. Then jumped backwards slightly teetering from its bitten leg and got into a defensive posture for whatever the enemy may do next. Clover seemed to sneeze from the second Sand Attack, her preening from her successful Bug Bite being cut short from her opponent's attack. Tomas winced in sympathy as Nate's Pokemon got in close and personal with another Scratch attack, one that was a critical hit.
Thinking quickly, Tomas said, "Use another String Shot! Get it stuck in place, if you can!"
Clover did as Tomas commanded, although her String Shot was a little erratic due to the Sand Attack lowering her accuracy. Still, perhaps she got Phantom just enough for him to pause just enough for her to dart forward with another Bug Bite.
Clover | female | swarm Level: 8 Hold Item: none Tackle | String Shot | Bug Bite | ---- | ---- | ---- >> Sand Attack lowered Clover's accuracy >> Critical Hit - Scratch took off 18% HP >> Clover used String Shot >> Clover used Bug Bite @natefyre, thanks for your patience as always, my day job has been busy lately. Wanted to ask what damage calculator you're using for this battle? While the Pokemon are low-leveled, the level difference and Sewaddle's type advantage and STAB from Bug Bite should have done more than 30% damage to a Purrloin. Not too big a deal with a first-time NPC battle, but for battles down the line with gym leaders and such, you'll want to use the damage calculator we have linked in the Battling thread in the Rules board with us mods to avoid any misunderstandings.

Mod Kurt Oh shoot! For some reason I had forgotten bug was super effective against dark types. I use that battle calculator but didn't factor that in. I do believe I also messed up Phantom's calculation somehow. I don't use bug types in the games enough to remember that. Ill bite the bullet for that one, and for the following post factor it in. The calculator shows a whopping amount actually 0_0 Status: Feeling It There was no doubt, Purrloin didn't have a chance at defeating the Sewaddle. Nate had forgotten Bug Types were strong against Phantom's Dark Type, and drew a sweat. He was thinking with his eyes, at how small the bug was and judging on stature. Big mistake. The bug's string shot was able to spew around Phantom's same injured leg, though not as plentiful or as effective, it would still cause a slowdown. Phantom cried out in worry as the insect closed in and bit the cat again, on the same leg with a Bug Bite. Phantom screeched and toppled backwards in a circled position shivering. Its injury clearly worsened. Nate made a judgment call. "Phantom, that's enough. Return!" Nate takes out Phantom's Poke Ball and returns his Pokemon before any more damage is done. PhantomHP: 10% | male | limber Level: 6 Hold Item: none Scratch | Growl | Sand Attack | Fake Out | ---- | ---- >> Sewaddle used String Shot. Nate then takes out his other Poke' Ball with Pericles in it, his last healthy Pokemon, and sends it out. "PERICLES! It's up...TO YOU!" The Pokemon comes out shaking its fur and gives a thumbs up to Nate, then stares down the competition and looks at the little bug annoyed. "Pan...cham." He growls under his breathe seemingly wanting to tear the creature apart for hurting Phantom so bad. "Pancham, no time to waste. Arm Thrust on the Sewaddle, go!" Pericles obeys with malice in its eyes and leaps into the air then drives itself downwards arching its arm towards the insect as it lands and ramming it several times. It appeared Nate had a type advantage THIS time. However, against the Vulpix about to come out next, Nate had no idea how Pericles would fair. It did have an Iron Fist ability, so its Arm Thrusts will likely do more damage than not, but, against a Vulpix, would be hard to Judge. Tomas couldn't help his excited grin when Nate decided to return his Purrloin to its Pokeball. "Great job, Clover!"
The Sewaddle preened for a moment but definitely shrunk back from the Pancham when Nate sent it out. Still, Clover seemed to buckle down, still having some energy to fight and perhaps whittle the Pancham's health down, too. Tomas didn't think that Clover would be able to take out both of Nate's Pokemon, but the Pancham seemed more than ready to rumble. Any help Clover could give Ginger would be great.
The Pancham wasted no time and smacked Clover four times. Individually, they didn't seem to do too much, but if the Pancham's speed allowed it to hit several times again, it could be worrisome.
"Alright, Clover," Tomas said, "dash at it with a Tackle attack!"
He hoped Clover would be able to survive another attack. If she does, her own ability may activate for one last attack of her own...
Clover | female | swarm Level: 8 Hold Item: none Tackle | String Shot | Bug Bite | ---- | ---- | ---- >> Arm Thrust hit four times >> Arm Thrust took off 19% HP >> Clover used Tackle @natefyre, No worries! The damage calculator takes a hot minute to set up, and sometimes I forget it defaults all the levels of the Pokemon to 100 or even to stick the abilities in the calculator itself, which can mess me up . It can be a little more complicated than we'd like, but we were thrilled it was updated with all of gen. 8 Pokemon, and has the percentages/damage right at the top for us. Speaking of abilities, I realized the calculator didn't factor in Iron Fist with the Arm Thrust moves. Wanting to be sure this battle is fair, I double-checked Bulbapedia and Bulbapedia doesn't have Arm Thrust listed as a move affected by Iron Fist. Guess a "thrust" isn't a "punch?"

Mod Kurt WHAAAAAT! Arm Thrust doesn't get Iron Fist factored in? BOGUS! But understandable! Status: Determined Nate sees the Sewaddle still present itself to have plenty left in the tank and goes in for a Tackle! However the previous Sand Attacks are starting to wear thin on it, and Pancham still had all of its energy out of the gate fired up for this battle. Nate commands it. "Pericles! Brace for impact let's hope that sand from Phantom causes it to lessen the blow!" Pericles nods, and with the insect's accuracy slightly off kilter, Pericles stays putting its arms in front of its face to brace for impact as the Tackle comes his way. The insect just barely hits the panda getting in a less than effective blow. The balance of its move was indeed not the best. The Pancham hardly flinches. "Ok Pericles, good job, now, get some payback! LEER! And then another ARM THRUST!" Pericles hears the orders and smirks. He stares down the bug using an intimidating stance and overwhelming stare lowering its defenses, and then while it was recovering from that fear filled gaze, Pericles darts at the foe and thrusts it again as many times as possible with Arm Thrust. The Pancham used another Arm Thrust, this time hitting Clover five times. Tomas winced and made a split-second decision to call his Pokemon back to her Pokeball. Clover had glowed briefly, probably due to her ability beginning to activate, but Tomas didn't want to take the chance, not when Clover was still so new to battling and all.
Besides, Tomas had yet to actually make one of Nate's Pokemon faint. Both trainers were fairly even with their battle at the moment.
"We need an edge, Ginger," Tomas said, looking to his Vulpix. She took a moment to stretch, of all things, despite Tomas telling her that it wasn't the best time for that, before darting into the makeshift battle arena. Ginger got into a battle-ready stance and Tomas commanded, "Use Disable!"
Ginger's eyes glowed briefly, a snarl on her mouth, as the glow extended to Pericles. The Pancham shouldn't be able to use Arm Thrust for a few good minutes, perhaps giving Tomas and Ginger an edge in the battle.
