cismale | he/him/his | 28 | homosexual | rancher | Kogitsunemaru, Touken Ranbu
Description: Verai has a powerful, striking presence. He's tall and broad-shouldered to start with, and the dense muscle packed onto his frame only makes him that much more imposing. His skin is a cool, pale tan, though his torso and limbs are littered in sharply pale scars which have long since healed. Most seem to be cuts and gashes, thought a frightening few seem more… troublesome, like mottled swathes from burns or the sharp pattern of inhuman teeth. Verai makes no real moves to either hide or show off his scars- what you get from today's outfit is what you get. However, it's difficult to get a good look at his body, simply because his hair is usually in the way. Verai's hair is long, falling well past his hips, a soft dusky white with only the faintest waves due to how it's often kept loose, and generally unmanaged. It's always brushed, but… that's it.
Verai's face is sharp, with constantly furrowed eyebrows and a straight nose. His face settles on haughty or disapproving most easily, lips sliding easily into a disgusted grimace. He knows how to play a room, though, and can make his expression seem flirtatious or downright cheery if he wanted, knowing how to best use his charisma. Verai's eyes are a deep red, which could almost look brown in dim lighting if not for the countenance they carry, predatorial and waiting.
In dress, Verai is deceptively casual. He likes clothes that are easy- shirts and pants that go with everything and require little effort. If an outfit requires a certain jacket and twelve accessories, forget it. He's only wearing it if it can be thrown on after just waking up. Verai doesn't wear a lot of jokey or humorous shirts, but isn't above wearing brand name things. Despite being usually dark washed, his clothes are also usually easy to move in. Just in case.
Personality: Verai is primarily tired. Not just physically, even though yes, he is constantly physically tired. He's more than capable of falling asleep anywhere, and he exercises that ability when he feels safe enough to do so. Weariness is evident in how Verai holds himself, a slight drag to his limbs, the way he waits and surveys before acting. But he is also mentally tired- All he comes across is something he has seen before, done before, bested before. It's not even the haughty pride of someone younger- It is the exhaustion of replaying a pre-boss cutscene for the fifth time today, mashing the button to hurry into a fight that's been all but memorized.
Verai is fiercely defensive of underdogs, those weak and without the grasp of power. He remembers keenly what it is like to be there, at the mercy of all others- and he hates it. He hates it to the point that he will stand up for anyone who he sees as the one getting the short end of the stick, even if it means going against the whole region itself. He's told to not feel compassion for someone who ended up in a rough spot because of their own poor decision-making? Sure- Verai can do that all night and all day. But someone who didn't choose? Someone who never had the luxury of choice? No. No, for those people, Verai would do anything to give them a modicum of choice. What they do with it afterwards is up to them- but it needs to be a choice.
Verai is aware of the concept of laws in the same way that birds are aware of the concept of earth, or dug tunnels. Sure, they exist, and probably help someone less fortunate than he- but why, in any situation, should he be bound to them? Sure, Verai has his own moral code that he follows to the letter- but who doesn't? And it sure as shards doesn't have anything to do with what any Officer So-and-So would have to say about things. As far as he's concerned, if he was supposed to be concerned about the law, the law should have been concerned about him. And it wasn't- so he isn't. If Verai needs to steal or attack or forge or anything else to get where he needs to be going? It's going to happen, and he's not going to set aside time to wring his hands over it. He's already done worse in his life.
Verai is loyal to ideals- he is loyal to people only so far as their interests meld with his. As soon as those things come into conflict, Verai is gone. That said, he tries to not make sweeping generalizations, or swear himself to anyone lightly. He's not giving off an impression of any sort of longstanding loyalty unless the person in question really deserves it- or, well, when it would make his job a lot easier.
Trusting is no longer a word in Verai's dictionary. It could have been, very easily. If he was raised the way a child was meant to be raised, he would have ended up a markedly different person than he is- more reserved and thoughtful than brash and physical, one who trusted people who offered him kindness and figures of authority, rather than a man who balks at random acts of kindness, and who bristles at anyone- anyone- who thinks they can hold power over him. He can be paranoid to the extreme, searching sentence structure and diction for hidden meaning or twists, and can run himself in circles over whether or not anyone near him can be trusted. Most of the time he simply accepts things for how they are- dark, malicious, cruel. He can't change it- it's just yet another thing he has to endure.
Verai does not believe in much. There are people out there who do, and they are misguided, but the majority of them are fine, and not hurting anyone. He simply can't- It's just a way of making a quick buck. Same as any other magical healing remedy, or miracle solution, or the cult he was raised under. They're all scams, and he doesn't have the time for them. So, sure, other people can go off and believe in pokemon granting wishes, or true love, or something else if it soothes their heart. He'll believe it when he can see it, thanks.
History:
tw: violence, character death
Verai doesn't talk about his past. Not surprising, as he isn't the type to talk openly about much. He's not going to delve into his life story because some granny tried to butter him up on the plane. As far as he's concerned, it's better if no one knows.
What others get are snippets. He grew up on a small little region not on most people's maps. He was part of a criminal group, and was concerningly good at it. At some point, when he was younger, he rescued Bumble- which he claims went the other way around. And then, some time later, he clawed his way out and snapped up a ticket to Gaia Island. Simple, easy, no one got hurt.
The deeper truth is that the island chain region was full of a corruption. Swindlers and snake-oil was the least of it- Verai was part of underground fights with no pokemon involved. The only way to get out was to win, all the way up to the top. No matter the cost. Regardless of what he had to do or who he had to hurt- Verai was getting there.
It's part of why he doesn't like talking about it.
But he tells more to his story, subconsciously. When he walks into a room, eyes flicking to barricades and exits and blind spots, it's because he always had to be prepared for a fight, at any time. The price for obliviousness was high. When he checks his locks, once and twice and three times, and sets up safeguards and safeguards for those safeguards, it's because he has learned there is no such thing as "too careful," and that it isn't paranoia if you're right.
And when he goes out of his way to avoid white-petalled flowers, and avoids certain foods- well. Everyone has felt love and loss both. There's no need to dwell on that. No need to dwell on missed chances, or shoddy last words.
Certainly not when he tore the whole institution down as he left, ensuring nothing remained of them, just like they'd all left nothing left of him.
He grew up across the sea. Life sucked, so he left. Relationship didn't work out. Came here for a new life. As far as he's concerned, all the other details are secondary. And maybe, if he's lucky, his past won't have followed him.
