"Excited?" Nitrine asked his Granbull as they entered the Highland Fields shop.
Oxana grunted. More like nervous. But he could understand; how often was it that one planned to ask out a date one had never met? Some of her nerves dispelled as she looked around the shop with her trainer, pausing by the Fire Stone on display. Careful of her huge, heavy jaw, she gave a few curious sniffs.
"That's a pretty stone, huh?" Nitrine asked, gazing at it. Come to think of it, Eevee evolved with Fire Stones, too. Flareon were such pretty creatures, from what he'd seen in photos. But, that's not quite what he was here for.
First, he needed to get to know the man in charge here.

(Tags: @aeranautics, we'll see how it goes! )"Doubt that's what you're here for." Raphael was reclined on a chair behind the counter, a bit out of the line of sight for customers when they first walk in. He didn't look the type to have Fire Pokemon. Of course, the customer that just walked in could have a Growlithe or Pansear hiding somewhere that needed the stone to evolve, but the Fire Stone just seemed to be a passing thought to him and his Granbull. Raphael stood up and wandered closer to the counter. "Name's Raph. Don't think I've seen you around often outside of the Marketplace. Which area of the island are you at?"

"No, you're right," Nitrine confirmed the shopkeeper, "I was just browsing." He and Oxana both straightened up to meet Raph at the counter. "I am Nitrine, and this is Oxana. My ranch is set up in the southeast of the island, near the Jaded Meadows. I've heard about you from Bryar and Kris, and it's good to finally meet you!"
Oxana placed her paws on the counter and rested her heavy lower jaw on them.

"Nitrine and Oxana." Raphael nodded, giving the Granbull a soft smile before looking back up at Nitrine. "You heard about me from those two and weren't scared off? That was nice of them to talk highly of me.
"So, you're just browsing?" he asked. "Or is there something else I can help you with?"

Nitrine shrugged. "They mostly said you were 'the strong, silent type'. I didn't know I was supposed to be scared of that!" he joked. Strong, silent type or no, Raphael seemed friendly enough.
Then he mentioned, "Yeah, I'm actually here because I heard you had a Jolteon available for stud. I was wondering if he and Oxana could try for a clutch together." Nitrine noticed Oxana's tail had begun to wag again, slowly. Still nervous. To Raphael, he added, "You can have one of the eggs, too, if you want. I really hope to get an Eevee, and I'm not sure what types you raise, but Snubbull can be really great companions."
At this, Oxana lifted her head to nod with enthusiasm. Of course she would agree.

Raphael scoffed at the description of himself. "Accurate enough, I suppose," he said. "Doubt either of those two would say something bad about anyone." He paused a moment. "Well, Kris might."
Nitrine spoke about Raphael's Jolteon and Raphael's gaze returned to Oxana, studying the Granbull as Nitrine suggested a clutch between the two Pokemon. Raphael came around the counter and squatted down in front of Oxana, keeping enough distance and moving slowly so as not to spook her.
"Your Oxana has been raised really well," Raphael said. "Clear eyes, vibrant coat, strong jaw... I'm sure she'll have some strong eggs. On that note..." He glanced back up at Nitrine. "Gizmo, my Jolteon, while physically mature enough to sire a clutch, is young. Of course, I'm working on training him, but at the moment, all that you would get from a clutch with Gizmo would be the possibility of an Eevee egg, rather than egg moves or the like for the Snubbull that may hatch."
He stood back up, crossing his arms and leaning against the counter. "While I appreciate the offer of a Snubbull egg as well, and I'm certain they're good companions, I am going to politely decline the offer. A Snubbull will probably be fine on my ranch, but it wouldn't be the most ideal. That, and I have my hands full with a few other young Pokemon and eggs at the moment.
"With that said, if you still want to try for a clutch, it'd be $1500," Raphael said. "Take your time in thinking about it."

Oxana turned to Raphael when he came out from behind the counter, leaning forward a little on her toes to sniff him. Pre-evolution, she would have gotten a lot closer, but by now she had clocked Nitrine in the face a few times with her enormous jaw to know how to be careful.
Nitrine's chest swelled with pride when Raphael commended him on how he cared for Oxana. "I do my best." When he continued, Nitrine's bright expression fell to one of mild confusion and disappointment. "So you're saying that there's no guarantee that there will be any Eevee eggs? At least, not until Gizmo matures a bit more? I had no idea that was how it worked; I've -- well, we've never had any eggs or anything before."
When Raph turned down the offer of a Snubbull egg, Nitrine gave a nod. "Just thought I would offer. I bet it's tough having a lot of babies around, huh? What kind of Pokemon do you have, by the way? I think Kris or Bryar or someone mentioned your ranch was in the west, where it's pretty dry, right?"
Raphael Green; this is me under the impression that, once the Marketplace board got set up, we began assuming the rancher shops were actually all set up in Central Port now and just pretending that's how it's always been. otherwise Nitrine's questions seem pretty silly xD Oxana - 0 (4/5)

(Tags: @aeranautics, haha, pretty sure everyone assumes that.)
Raphael gave the other man a half-shrug. "When two different species breed, there's never a guarantee as to how many eggs of each species will be conceived, especially when the parents are of different rarity, if you will. Snubbull and Granbull are a bit more common in the world because of their hardier genetics. The Eevee family has an unsteady DNA make-up already and, unless you have two Eevee breeding, it can be a little tough for that species to win out when it comes to clutches.
"I'm not sure if there is a correlation between a Pokemon's maturity or not when it comes to egg species," Raphael continued. "In my experience, it depends on the genetics and rarity of the parent Pokemon themselves. Oxana's genetics are stronger than Gizmo's, and it's probably easier for her to conceive Snubbull eggs rather than Eevee eggs, giving her clutch a better chance of having being mostly Snubbull.
"I'm not trying to dissuade you," he said, "but if you're looking mainly for an Eevee egg, I wanted you to understand the odds you're playing against. While there's always a possibility that Oxana conceives an Eevee egg or two, you could be looking at a clutch of six Snubbull eggs. Would you have room for all of them on your ranch? Or good homes as back-ups if you don't? Those are probably the most important questions you need to ask yourself when breeding Pokemon."
Raphael gave Nitrine a quirked smile. "I appreciate the offer, and thank you for graciously accepting my decline. It's not too bad with a couple of babies, but I'm not the, uh, most paternal guy around despite my background. Got some good older Pokemon to help out, and thankfully Bryar doesn't mind me bothering him with questions. He's good like that, if you need some advice down the road too.
"Yeah, my place is Highland Fields over in the west." Raph nodded. "Fire, electric, and rock are my preferred types, but I have a few others to round out the team, especially when we used to travel and battle. You mostly raise Fairy-types?" He glanced down at Oxana.

Nitrine listened intently to Raphael's explanation of Pokemon breeding and eggs. It was straightforward and easy to understand, and given Raphael's obvious knowledge of Pokemon like Eevee, it made sense. The questions he posed to Nitrine were not ones he had thought about. Once Raphael was done explaining, Nitrine finally said, "Wow, I hadn't realized that Eevee had such, uh, weak DNA, I guess you could say." He rubbed the back of his head. "Sounds like there's a lot more to breeding than just picking two Pokemon to have eggs, huh?"
Oxana had been quiet, confused by the talk of all that technical stuff like genetics, but even she seemed to agree that breeding was much more complicated than that.
To Raphael, Nitrine went on, "Well, thank you for all the information! It looks like I have some thinking to do as far as my ranch's first clutch goes. I really do want to raise an Eevee, but it can wait until I figure some things out. I'm glad I have a few other ranchers to talk to about eggs -- Bryar and Kurt are really knowledgeable, too." Raph talked about what his life was like having a few young Pokemon on the ranch, Nitrine said, "I know what you mean. I adopted a really young Sentret awhile back, and she's still kind of a handful, especially with my sneaky Zorua around.
"You used to travel and battle, too?" he inquired. "I feel like so many of the other ranchers here were traveling Pokemon trainers before settling down to be ranchers. I guess it's not so weird, though; a lot of students at my school eventually moved on to do the same thing. And yep, you're on the money -- mostly Fairy- and Normal-types, though I ended up with my one Zorua for irony, plus a Shellos for an eventual Ground-type. I've heard Fire- and Electric-types can be really energetic and sometimes stubborn. Is that true?"
Raphael Green; we can keep this going if you want for development, or Raph can kick Nitrine out whenever because he has work to do~ Happiness: Oxana - 0 (5/5) +1
